our story

We are one of madison's most noted specialty retail destination. we have customers that are 2nd and 3rd generations. For almost 50 years now the attic/coffee mill cafe has provided a unique shopping experience for its visitors.

In April of 1971, R.B. and Irene List first opened the doors of The Attic in a turn of the century grocery store that previously housed T.P. Vincent Grocer for more than 50 years. The restored red brick two story building has a cast iron front added in 1901 made by The Madison Machine Company. Many of the original store fixtures and shelves remain and have been adapted for use to this day. Over the years The Attic provided unique gifts, crafts, custom picture framing and collectible prints. In the summer of 1971 the List's daughter Judy George and her husband Phil moved from Texas to Madison with their family to take over the business.

The Coffee Mill Cafe was a delicious addition in 1993 featuring Madison's best gourmet coffee, tea and specialty drinks in addition to a wonderful selection of pies, cakes and other homemade treats.

Today The Attic is in it's 4th generation of family operation and the Coffee Mill Cafe is the most prominent feature. We offer in-house Artisan Roasted Specialty Coffees from around the world, delicious creations of Grilled Panini Sandwiches, Wraps, Salads, Soups, Gourmet Foods, Specialty Coffee Drinks as well as our Wonderful Selection of Gifts. We hope you will come and visit us in Madison, Indiana and enjoy your time in this special place as much as we do.
